An interesting coincidence. Last night, on a whim, I watched the first three episode of The Walking Dead and was stunned by how great they are, especially in contrast to the mess the show eventually became. And it also occured to me that The Waking is very much a Western that started something like Lonesome Dove but became Silverado.
If only Frank Darabont was able to continue on with the show after Season 2, TWD could have been one of the great shows of all time, deeply humanistic and similar in tone and consequence to The Last of Us. I watched TWD all the way up until Rick left and that was it for me. I really do think TWD is one of the shows that broke the American soul in a fundamental way in the years of the War on Terror. The other show that broke America, I think, was Survivor with its zero sum rules. America doesn’t work in zero sum, though I am aware it has always been zero sum for some of us.
How incredible that art gives us constellations like these where we can all point at, name, and share meaning together!

Oh, wow, I very much believe that Survivor gave us Trump. And, yes, I left Walking Dead when Rick did.
