For several reasons, The Last Of Us is more morally relevant than The Walking Dead. First, The Last Of Us portrays a world without clear heroes or villains, where circumstance forces every character to make difficult moral choices to survive. On the other hand, The Walking Dead often portrays characters as either good or evil, with little room for moral ambiguity. This simplistic portrayal of morality fails to capture the complexity of real-life ethical dilemmas in situations with dire circumstances.

Second, The Last Of Us is more emotionally resonant than The Walking Dead. The relationship between Joel and Ellie develops naturally and believably throughout the story, where The Walking Dead too often prioritizes shock value over emotional depth, with many characters feeling one-dimensional and disposable.

Third, The Last Of Us has a more nuanced portrayal of violence than The Walking Dead. While both stories depict graphic violence, The Last Of Us does not glorify it like The Walking Dead often did. Instead, The Last Of Us reveals the psychological toll that violence takes on the characters and explores the moral implications of killing in a way that The Walking Dead was never brave enough to attempt.

Fourth, The Last Of Us is a more thought-provoking story than The Walking Dead. The Last Of Us asks difficult questions about the nature of survival and the value of human life while challenging the viewer to think deeply about these issues. The Walking Dead, by contrast, often relies on cliched tropes and predictable plot twists with characters who could fit easily into a demented modern Looney Tunes cartoon.

Finally, The Last Of Us is more artistically innovative than The Walking Dead. Born with stunning visuals, a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, and masterful storytelling that elevates it above most other video games. By contrast, The Walking Dead relies heavily on genre conventions and often feels like a rehash of previous zombie stories projected from a graphic novel through cinema in a way that abandons the power of both formats to create something mediocre.

In conclusion, The Last Of Us is a more morally relevant and emotionally resonant story than The Walking Dead. It challenges the viewer to think deeply about complex ethical dilemmas, while The Walking Dead produced plastic and simplistic portrayals of good and evil. The Last Of Us is a masterpiece of storytelling that deserves recognition as one of the greatest narrative transfers from one audio-visual medium to another.

Please enjoy this podcast episode with my good friends and brilliant podcasters Jubel, Karl & Bryon, where we engage in a long discussion about every facet of The Last Of Us. It gets very emotional as we talk about why this work of art matters so much. I want to thank my friends for being there to discuss great art with me.
