One of my favorite Twin Peaks The Return characters is Ray Monroe, played by George Griffith. I met George in England at the 2019 UK Twin Peaks Festival (the last one of those amazing festivals, sadly). And I met George again a month ago during Twin Peaks days in Snoqualmie, Washington. He’s an amazing artist. Writer, Director, and actor. He exudes cool and calm. He’s got his shit together, and he lights up the room when he talks about the film.
Earlier this week, George posted an Instagram photo that had a ripple in the sky, which, if you watch Twin Peaks, you know that means something to us Return nerds. And I was a bit inspired, so I riffed off a few lyrics and DM’d George that I would write him a song. I don’t think he expected this, but I’m happy with it as a creative expression that no one else could or would do except me.
These lyrics are a hodgepodge of mental riffing and some old poetry I had lying around. You’re hearing me create the lyrical rhythms live. None of the lyrical was planned before I started singing. Some of it doesn’t work as well. That’s okay. I trust the process. I own Rick Rubin’s book.
I wasn’t expecting this blend of Maynard James Keenan and David Bowie to come out of my mouth, but it happened. If I could sing like anyone in any song, it’d be Layne Staley from Alice in Chains (rest his troubled soul).
Songs do not come out perfect. The most important thing is that the songs come out.
George, this is a long musical meditation for you, buddy. Keep making your art!
In my life there was no sweeter the air not cleaner the grass not greener. Pierce my heart with an arrow of trust, drawn in a circle with love not lust. Pierce Me. Crucify Me. I'll be your martyr. But please remain my friend and partner. With eyes of god, I look anew. With heart of love I look to you. With pains of lust, I'll hold your ground. With hands of trust, you'll hold my crown. With thoughts of love I think of you, emotions strong it paints me blue. Black water bees translucent in the Sun. Flying skies Fearful eyes Move from many to one. I see a ripple in the sky. I wonder whose it for? I've gotta meet this guy. There's a knocking at the door. I wonder whose it for? Should have never opened it. I guess that I was hoping it was you. Now what should I do? You were so mean to her the last time we all met. I thought it was the last time we could say that we were friends. The stranger in the parking lot is gonna sell us all some pot. How much money have you got? And all the blood she bled, we just couldn't put it back. I see a ripple in the sky. I wonder whose it for and where's this guy? Where is God? I was coming down from Space Mountain. I was walking through Candy Land. I was caught in a Trouble Bubble. I was singing in Santa's band. I was a one purse carson in the Game of Life. I was Colonel Mustard in the study with his knife. I was the blue and red dots on the Twister mat. I killed your army in Risk and on their meat I got fat. Ripple in the sky for Ray. Where will he run to now?
